Hummus is a perfect choice for Summertime entertaining- all year for that matter. We are always on the hunt for a great recipe to prepare at a moment’s notice, something that can be easily taken outside and brought to any gathering. That is why we like hummus for it’s versatility, creamy and smooth texture and yummy taste. It is a Middle Eastern snack you can serve with vegetables, pita chips, crackers and breads- it can be a snack on it’s own or a dollop of hummus can be an interesting ingredient for a main dish. In addition to the traditional hummus made from chickpeas, hummus can be made with sweet potatoes, avocado, black bean and pumpkin. There are many varieties of hummus such as roasted red pepper hummus, roasted garlic hummus, and our newest discovery…Everything Bagel Hummus! There are also dessert hummus flavors as well. Today we are sharing our creative ideas with you so the next time you are thinking of an interesting appetizer, side dish or dessert, you can pop back here and be inspired.

What To Eat With Hummus

When we think of preparing hummus for an appetizer or a snack- hummus and vegetables- hummus and chips- dessert hummus and fruit are what we come up with. Whether you use store bought hummus, make your own or have a favorite restaurant’s selection, always use the freshest. The possibilities are endless. We know we are talking about hummus as an appetizer, however, it would make a nice ingredient for a bowl recipe.

Hummus And Veggies

For a very light, colorful and easy appetizer or snack, hummus and veggies is a breeze. This combo makes a beautiful tray with the veggies listed below. Carving out the bell pepper so it can serve as the bowl for the hummus dip or hold carrot and celery sticks adds interest when you serve it. Consider adding olives and nuts- like almonds or pistachios for more ideas. It’s a great snack for kids and adults too!

Carrots

Carrots add beautiful color- choose the miniature carrots, carrot chips or carrot sticks.

Cucumber

Cucumber is natural with hummus. Add some tomatoes and sprinkle with sea salt for a little extra flavor! Check out our post here on Spring Appetizers and Salads for a creative dip using hummus and cucumber.

Bell Peppers

Yellow, red and green peppers can be sliced up. Or you can hollow them out and they can be the container for the hummus or other vegetables.

Celery & Cherry Tomatoes

Celery sticks and Cherry Tomatoes add texture and color.

Black Olives and Red Onions

Black olives and chopped red onions would be a delicious topping for your hummus along with a very light sprinkle of extra virgin olive oil.

Best Chips For Hummus

What are the best chips for Hummus- homemade are truly the best, however we have included some other favorites. The one thing to consider is having a chip that holds up to scooping the hummus out of the bowl. No one likes a fragile chip that breaks off in your hand- do not deal with chip fail!!!

We found the most popular dessert hummus is a Chocolate Hummus, however, there are pumpkin, banana, brownie batter and even s’mores. Fruits and biscuits are the best choice to serve with these. Think apples, pears, strawberries, bananas, graham crackers, vanilla cookies and Effies Biscuits- yummy.

Is Hummus A Healthy Snack?

Yes and Yes!! The basic hummus recipe originated in the Middle East and consists of chick peas, tahini (sesame seed paste), olive oil, lemon and garlic. It is a plant based protein that is loaded with fiber, vitamins and minerals- manganese, copper, folate and iron. Most hummus is free of gluten, dairy and nuts. Everything in moderation- right people!!
