Fall Makeup Over 60-Embrace The Season With A Radiant Glow

The other day we had a fun excursion- went to our local beauty apothecary, Todd’s Room for a fall makeup application and lesson. Our friend, Laurie Shooshanian, is our eyebrow and makeup specialist. Laurie spent time with us doing Bev’s makeup starting from a perfectly clean face- absolutely no makeup- to a daytime look and a night time look. Use this post as a guide for creating a beautiful, modern fall makeup over 60 look that feels comfortable and looks radiant.

The Perfect Canvas: Clean and Hydrated Skin and Do Your Brows

Laurie starts with the eyebrow as the first step for any makeup application in Fall and every season. First, she walked us through her tips. Brush your eyebrows in the direction that they grow. Then, to fill in your eyebrow with a brow pencil, start at the top middle of the arch and use very light brush strokes to fill in from the arch to the end of the brow line. Next, from the inside brow above the tear duct, use light pencil strokes on the underside of the brow to fill in missing hair follicles. After that, set with an eyebrow gel. Finally, for a long-lasting look, set with brow powder applied with an angled brow brush—use a gentle tapping motion to apply.

A flawless makeup application starts with clean and hydrated skin. At this point, Laurie uses a collagen serum. Alternatively, you can use a primer here as well. Bev uses Lune+Aster Real Glow Primer over her HA serum and moisturizer.

Concealed & An Evened Out Skin Tone

Mature skin has the propensity for signs of aging- sun spots, dark circles, redness and thinner skin. A concealer acts like the magic eraser for all of these. Laurie’s choice is the Ultimate Corrector 5-IN-1 Pro Palette by Cinema Secrets-5 shades in the same range that are blending heros. She recommends using a brush or your ring finger. The ring finger has a lighter touch- who knew. Remember to use on your eyelids too to remove redness and under the chin and also neck for sun damage spots.

Then you can use a tinted moisturizer, a tinted primer or a lightweight foundation- hydrating makeup is a great choice. Apply with a sponge to blend and remember to wet the sponge lightly before use. Bev likes to use the Alastin HydraTint and Val uses Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Perfect Foundation. After this step, you can set with a loose powder-like Bare Minerals Loose Powder Foundation SPF 15 using a powder brush. Apply very lightly.

Eyes

To start, highlight just under the eyebrow with a highlighting pencil. Next, use a base color in a powder that is close to the concealer you applied on the eyelid, covering the entire lid. Then, Laurie used a clay color starting in the crease area on the outer edge of the lid. Using a circular motion, work toward the midline to cover the eyelid. This color is great for Fall and all year long.

After that, keep it soft and blend with a tapered brush. Then, line the upper lid with a very sharp black liner pencil—start at the inside and work your way out. Here, you can create a cat-eye look by sweeping the line upward. If needed, make any corrections with a Q-tip. Next, with an angled brush, soften and set the line with a dark brown eyeshadow over the tight line.

Finally, apply mascara from the root out and from the outside of the eye in—two coats. Laurie warms her mascara by placing the tube in a cup of hot water so it doesn’t get caught inside the tube.

Optionally, if you don’t want to use liner on the bottom eyelid, simply apply mascara to the bottom lashes.

Blush – Bronzer

Laurie likes to do the bronzer first. First, don’t use a large brush and only apply where the sun naturally shines. Start on the forehead, nose, chin, and cheeks, working from the outside of the face toward the midline.

Next, for blush, use the same small brush. Look straight ahead and smile, then go lightly over the apple of the cheek. After that, sweep in a straight line across the cheek, nose, and other cheek. Then, very lightly go under the nose and under the chin. You can use a cream or a powder blush—Laurie likes either.

Lips

Laurie recommends using a lighter color for day and a darker shade for night. Use a lip liner first, close your mouth, do a closed smile and work from the outside in. After lining the lip, color in lip with liner, then go over with your lipstick. Since it is Fall and going into the Holiday Season, choose a slightly dark color. If you like gloss, apply over. Fall lipstick colors are burgundy, plum, burnt peach and rose tinted browns.

Experiment, Glow, and Share Your Look

We focused on a Fall daytime look for this post. Taking this look to a Fall evening, Laurie added a deeper brown eyeshadow in the crease of the eyelid. Use a light powder with light reflecting properties that create a pearlescent luminosity when placed under the eyebrow, right above the tear duct and right on the top of your cheeks- very light. You can also add eyelashes for an evening look for Fall and anytime. Lip colors can be a deeper shade of the daytime look you choose. These techniques are perfect for achieving a radiant fall makeup over 60 style that’s elegant and effortless.

Have fun and experiment with these tips for updating your makeup this Fall.
