Fine Hair Care 101

Fine Hair Care 101

When you are the proud owner of fine hair you understand the hoops we jump through to keep our hair looking good. Both of us have daughters with thick hair that they complain about and we just don’t get it!! They blow dry it straight and it looks good for days and days! Their ponytails are three times the size of ours!!! What’s not to love. Well..we realize no one is happy about their hair 100% of the time.

When we decided to write this post about Fine Hair Care, we knew we had to go to an expert. We spent some time with Emilio Giglio, co-owner of alex emilio salon, with two locations in Royal Oak, Michigan and Birmingham, Michigan. We have both been clients of Emilio for many years and think his skills as a hair stylist are exemplary. Emilio is creative and knows how to make a girl look good. In addition….he is just plain fun to talk to and the alex emilio salons have a professional and approachable vibe. We highly recommend Emilio and his team of hair stylists at both salon locations.

Fine hair can be defined as hair that is either fine at the scalp or fine at the ends. The reasons for this are numerous; genetics play a huge role in this along with hair follicles that are clogged from all the products we use, nutrients, medications, medical conditions and our age…..darn!!! Between the products that were discussed, cutting and coloring techniques, we learned a lot. Emilio believes that women who have fine hair do not have to wear their hair short. Women can wear their hair longer but a good haircut will make it workable. Emilio said he abides by the slogan “Your ends need friends”. If this is not happening…time for a trim. He also believes in framing the face with shorter layers that will assist in the illusion of fuller hair. We decided to showcase the products that will help strengthen the hair and promote growth. We also want to share the styling products that work the best with fine hair to promote ooompf and not wilt- if you have fine hair, you get this!!

Kerastase Products for Fine Hair and Zenagen Shampoo Treatment for Fine Hair

Above is a shampoo and serum regimen that Emilio recommends. The product lines may be pricey but Emilio strongly believes that the superior ingredients in these products work. He explained the research and technology that goes into these formulations play a factor in the products living up to their claims of strengthening, volumizing and conditioning the hair and improving the health of the hair follicle. The Zenegen product is a shampoo to promote fuller hair growth. The Kerastase Genesis and Initialiste products are serums that are applied to the scalp to promote hair strength and growth.

Here are some additional shampoos from the Kerastase line that address fine hair and scalp concerns.

Kerastase VIP Volume in Powder Dry Shampoo and K Laque Hairspray

What would we do without dry shampoo? Anyone of us with fine hair know we should not wash our hair everyday. That is when dry shampoo works its magic. Dry shampoo freshens up your roots between washes and adds volume and shine to the strands. The above products by Keratstase are wonderful for styling. The VIP is a dry shampoo and the Laque Dentelle is a flexible hairspray that works.

Tecni art products- dry shampoo, dry finishing spray, super dust, gel and foam

alex emilio salons also carry the Tecni Art line of products that are manufactured by L’Oreal Professional. If price is an issue, these products that also work for fine hair, are less expensive but effective. All alex emilio salons carry the above products. These also help with adding volume without weighing the hair down.

When products are recommended, ask how to use them. It always helps to watch a professional demonstrate on your own hair how to apply and use the product. Also with fine hair the motto, “Less is More” is applicable for product amount and manipulating the hair. One moment you are rocking your awesome hair and one minute too long- you look like a deflated souffle- haha!

If you have any questions or would like to purchase any of these products, please visit the Royal Oak or the Birmingham location of the alex emilio salons. Or if you are looking for a new look, do yourself a favor and book an appointment. Click here for more information. You won’t be disappointed.
