Keeping skin hydrated and glowing takes more that just using a moisturizer now and then. It takes a conscious effort and choice to incorporate habits that will help your skin stay healthy. We all experience dry skin at times where our skin can look dull and the appearance of fine lines is increased. Today we are sharing a guide on some of the causes of dry skin how to keep it hydrated & glowing no matter the season. A daily skin care routine will help your skin maintain a healthy appearance.
How To Keep Skin Hydrated & Glowing
First of all we all need to make sure we pay attention to the health of our skin- it’s our body’s largest organ. It does so much for us. Getting a little nerdy here- It acts like a barrier, helps to regulate body temperature, detects sensations, excretes waste products and absorbs medications and vitamins. Let’s discuss some of the causes of dry skin and what you can do to acheive hydrated and glowing skin.
What Causes Dry Skin
The Environment
Cold air and hot air can strip moisture from your skin making it feel dry and dehydrated. Sun and wind exposure, low humidity, pollutants, detergents and harsh soaps can also dry out your skin
Excessive Hot Showers and Baths
Those long hot showers and baths feel so good but they should be kept to a minimum. Short and lukewarm showers and baths are best for all skin types- normal, dry or oily
Harsh Soaps and Cleaning Products
Certain skin care products can strip moisture from your skin-use gentle products that contain
hydrating ingredients
Skin and Medical Conditions
Eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis can cause dryness and irritation. There are other medical conditions that can lead to dry skin as well.
Age
A fact of life-as we age our skin becomes drier due to decreased oil production
Medications
Take into consideration that certain medications can contribute to dryness as a side effect
Lifestyle Choices
Smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and poor nutrition can impact skin health. So can prolonged sun exposure with out sunscreen or protective clothing. Everything in moderation is a good rule. Wear sunscreen, hats and stylish protective clothing with UPF. Also, make sure you are drinking plenty of water to keep your hydration levels high enough to prevent dehydrated skin.
How to Keep Your Skin Hydrated & Glowing
Use a Gentle Cleanser
Use cleansing products that are gentle and draw water in- like hyaluronic acid. Cleansing your skin with lukewarm water and using gentle products protects your skin barrier. The cleansers listed below all have these properties. They contain vitamins, Niacinimide, Shea butter, hyaluronic acid and more. They protect the skin’s natural moisture.

Serums
Another step in skin care aimed at maintaining your skins moisture levels is the use of serums. For best results when using a serum-leave your skin moist after cleansing to help your serums and moisturizers draw water back in. Using a serum before your moisturizer offers a higher concentration of active ingredients in a light formulation that will quickly absorb into your skin. These serums are designed to draw water back in, replenish the skin and strengthen the skins protective barrier. As we age, protecting our skin is vital to maintaining our health.

Moisturizers
Aren’t we all looking for moisturizers that leave your skin feeling hydrated and smooth. Look for moisturizers that contain humectants, emollients, occlusives and hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin, ceramides, or shea butter. These ingredients work together to help attract and retain moisture, leaving your skin feeling great. Many of these products are recommended by dermatology professors and clinical physicians because they hydrate, soothe and repair the skin barrier.

Sunscreens
UV rays can damage your skin, lead to dryness and health issues none of us want. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher every day, even on cloudy days, and reapply regularly if you are outdoors. Find one that you like and stick with it. Bev’s favorites are the Alastin Silk Shield All Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30, the Alastin HydraTint Pro Mineral Broad Spectrum Sunscree SPF 36 and the SuperGoop Play Everyday SPF 50. Val’s favorites are the Zo Skin Health Daily Sheer Broad Spectrum SPF50. Don’t forget sunscreen for your hands too. Here are the ones mentioned above and a few extra.

Exfoliate
Regular exfoliation can help remove dead skin cells and allow moisturizers to penetrate more deeply. Choose a gentle exfoliating scrub or use a washcloth to lightly exfoliate your skin. Dry brushing is also a useful exfoliant. Whether using an exfoliant or dry brushing, please go easy. Over exfoliating can damage the skin’s natural moisture barrier making it more sensitive and increase dryness. That’s not something we want!

Lifestyle Considerations
Drink more water– it is crucial for maintaining hydrated and healthy skin. We all know this.
Eat more foods that are rich in anti-oxidants – example fruits and vegetables. Bright colored foods, green leafy veggies.
Eat more healthy fats-omega 3 found in salmon, nuts, seeds and olive oil. Pecans and walnuts are packed with antioxidants.
Avoid dehydrating drinks and foods, alcohol, excessive coffee and foods and beverages that are high in sodium and sugar. Notice we said excessive coffee-a few cups is ok!
Quit Smoking-the hemoglobin binds with the carbon monoxide instead of oxygen in the blood reducing it’s ability to carry oxygen, support cell growth and repair itself. Our body likes oxygen!!
Wear Clothing With UPF Sun Protection– This one is easy with all of the stylish clothing that has UPF sun protection right in the fabric. Wearing a hat with a wide brim is another way to look chic while protecting your beautiful skin.
