What Causes Damaged Hair

Medications and overall health– some health conditions and medications can cause Hair Loss. Also, diet, stress and nutritional deficiencies can Hair Damage.

Hair Products and Styling-Coloring, Perming and Relaxing the hair. Also, certain Shampoos and styling products can be a problem for your hair.

Heat and lack of moisture– Blow dryers, curling irons, flat irons, hot weather and humid climates can dry out hair and cause a lack of moisture. Heat styling is very damaging-especially for fine and damaged hair. Keep this to a minimum in your hair care routine. Also, the sun can damage your hair by drying out your hair and scalp.

Towel drying hair– rubbing wet hair with a towel can cause breakage and frizz. Always remember, wet hair is more fragile

Tight Hair styles– too much tension can cause breakage. Limit styling your hair in tight pony tails or braids. Even fine hair can suffer if simply pulling it back with a clip.

Washing your hair too frequently. Over shampooing your hair strips your hair of if natural oils, weakens the hair shaft-making it more susceptible to breakage and split ends. If you color your hair, too frequent washing can accelerate fading.

How To Make Your Hair Healthy Again

Make your hair healthy again by centering on restoring moisture to the hair, minimize what damages hair and incorporate a healthy diet to support hair growth and overall health. Sounds easy, right? Here are some of the best tips we found for you.

Get Regular Trims

We know we just said this, however, it is true. If you have split ends, they continue to travel up the hair shaft. By trimming your hair every 4-7 weeks, this removes the damaged ends and your hair looks healthier. Your ends need friends.

Prioritize Overall Health

Make sure you drink plenty of water to keep your hair moisturized. Eat a balanced diet rich in proteins and minerals to support healthy hair growth. Manage stress to reduce hair loss and damage.

The Low Down on Shampooing

Washing your hair less frequently will help keep the natural oils on your hair longer. Wash as needed but stretch the time in between by using a dry shampoo. When you do use shampoo, only apply the shampoo to the scalp not the length of the hair. Use a conditioner designed for your particular hair to help with detangling. Always rinse with cool water- this reduces frizz and closes the hair cuticle. Also, it improves the health of your scalp. Below are some of our favorite shampoos, conditioners and dry shampoos. Condition Your Hair Properly

Use a conditioner to add moisture when you shampoo. Apply the conditioner only on the mid lengths and ends of the hair. Use of a hair mask every 1-3 weeks is also recommended for more intense treatment. Just remember to follow the instructions and see how your hair responds. We both use Kerastase hair masques. We included the Oribe and Prose products because they come highly recommended. Click on any photo for more information and details.

Protect From Heat

Okay, we all use heat on our hair sometimes. Ideally, letting your hair air dry would be best, but if you have fine, thin hair- that’s not always the look you want. Let your hair air dry a bit- no rubbing with the towel. Remember, wet hair is fragile- blot with a towel and use a wide tooth comb-starting at the bottom to remove tangles. Protect from heat by lowering the heat settings on the blow dryer and curling iron. Limit the time of use and frequency to ultimately protect your hair from heat. Styling products that have a heat protectant in them is a great choice. We have some of our favorite products and tools below. Click on any photo for more information or details.

Wear A Hat On Sunny Days

The sun contributes to hair damage by drying it out and causing breakage. Not only is a hat a great idea, think of sunscreen for your hair. There are leave-in conditioners for your hair that have sunscreen in them. Click on the products below for more information., a

Increase Time Between Hair Processing

It’s fun to change your hair color and style. However, once you start coloring, relaxing or processing your hair, you have to maintain the look. Let your hair rest between treatments to give it time to rehydrate and recuperate between the chemical workout

More Tips

Avoid tight hairstyles- ponytails, braids and buns. Repeated tension on the hair follicles can lead to hair loss. Limit extension use and have them professionally placed and maintained. Most of all, be patient. The process of repairing damaged hair takes time. Oh and try using a silk pillowcase. We have included the Blissy Brand and Quince has one too.
