We all know the benefits of working out- improved physical health and mental health, prevention and management of health problems, increased energy and more. Finding a workout regimen that you enjoy and will stay with, is key. Having the right workout gear- notably your workout shoes, will increase your performance, prevent injuries, keep you motivated and comfortable.
With the plethora of workout shoes to choose from, choosing the right shoe can be confusing. Today, we are sharing a guide on how to pick workout shoes that suit your needs.
How To Pick Workout Shoes
Consider The Type Of Activity
When selecting the right workout shoe, consider what activity you will be engaged in. We don’t wear heels to shop for five hours-right!
Are you walking, running, strength training, playing pickleball, tennis or going to the gym? There is a difference in the type of shoe to choose. A walking shoe has more flexibility and bend while a running shoe has a sole that has less flex and more cushioning. A pickleball shoe is lighter and more flexible to cover the smaller pickleball court. A tennis shoe is heavier and more rigid to accomodate the larger tennis court and longer rallies. A training shoe is more durable and heavier than a running shoe. It also has more side to side support for lateral movement. We have listed some of our personal favorites below. Get The Fit Right
The fit of your workout shoe has to be right because this shoe will provide support, stability and cushioning. Always try them on with the same type of workout sock you will be wearing. The fit should be snug, but not so tight that you can’t wiggle your toes. We suggest going to a store that specializes in athletic footwear. They have experienced sales associates that can provide valuable information. Make sure to inform them of all foot issues- high arches, foot and ankle issues, previous toe issues. You want your workout shoes to have that perfect fit. Below we have included some of our favorite athletic socks for you. Click on any photo for more information.

Other Considerations
More features to consider are the weight of the shoe, the breathability of the shoe and the durability of the shoe. If you are running, you will want a lighter shoe. If you work out in warm weather, a breathable shoe or one that has wicking capabilities will be a great consideration. For durability, always go with the workout shoe that is made from materials that can withstand the rigors of the activity you are wearing it for. For walkers and runners, if you put in miles each day, you might want to purchase a few pairs of the same shoe and rotate their use. That way, you always have a pair ready for your work out.
Also, walkers and runners- GET SHOES AND CLOTHING WITH REFLECTIVE MATERIAL ON THEM. It’s startling to come upon runners and walkers that you can’t see.
And, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention- buy a stylish workout shoe. There are so many cute ones out there-just saying.

How Often To Replace Workout Shoes
Experts recommend these practical guidelines for replacing your workout shoes.
Replace Workout Shoes every 300-500 miles of use or between 6 months to a year, whichever comes first. Also, follow these below.
Loss of Cushioning- if it feels compressed on the footbed or you can simply bend it, it’s time is up. It will no longer provide the proper shock absorption you need.
Visible Wear and Tear- if the tread is wearing down or the shoe no longer retains it shape. Hard tennis courts and paddle courts really do a number on the bottom of the shoe- check this often. If the tread is worn, you have a greater chance of slipping and falling.
Discomfort or Pain- if you start to feel pain anywhere on the foot, knees, shins or other joints- it’s time to replace your athletic shoes. They should always feel comfortable.
Age- Over time the shoe may lose its effectiveness. Some materials degrade over time and break down.
How To Care For Your Workout Shoes
Rotate Your Shoes- if you buy multiple pairs and rotate their use, you’ll distribute the wear and tear.
Clean Shoes Regularly- wipe down with dilute solution of soap and water. Click here and here for recommendations of products. Check the treads for any debris caught on the bottom and check your laces. If the laces are worn, replace them.
Storage- store any workout shoe in a cool, dry place.
