How did the Mom Jean ever come back in style!!!?????? We were tyrannized by our high school daughters in the late 90’s for wearing Mom Jeans! There were even times when we were forbidden to wear them around their friends! Remember the SNL skit??? What is a Mom Jean you ask? A Mom Jean is high waisted with a straight leg fit through the thigh with a slightly narrow ankle on occasion. The legs are roomier allowing your legs room to move about. The denim material can be slightly heavier than other jeans. The high waist on the Mom Jean elongates your legs and holds you in! The Mom Jean is making a big comeback so stay tuned for it’s new modern twist.

The Mom Jean can be very flattering for all different body types. A woman with heavier legs would benefit from the slimming effect of a Mom Jean because of the straight line from the hip down. Women with a rectangular body shape would also benefit from the accentuated waist on a Mom Jean. The beauty of the Mom Jean is they can be worn through all seasons. Pair them with a sandal or espadrille in the summer and your favorite bootie or a chunky loafer in the fall and winter for a year round solution. Think how stylish this silhouette of jean would look in the fall with either a leather moto jacket, a puffy and comfortable teddy coat or a short puffer jacket. The styling options for this jean are many but there are some stying options that just do not work too well. Do not wear a large and oversized top or sweater. This is too overwhelming for the overall look. Solid Color Tops and Sweaters Look Best With a High Waist

The mom jean has a high waist so solid colors on top look great. In addition if you are wearing a vest, jacket or coat in a solid color it will add more balance to the entire look.

Play with Different Tucking Styles

Try the front tuck or full tuck to get the right look.

Play with Different Tops, Sweaters, Jackets, Vests and Blazers

Really try on the different profiles- just remember to keep the balance in mind. If you are adding a Jacket or Blazer a thinner top tucked in is a winning look.

Eight Pairs of Mom Jeans

We did the research and found these eight pairs of Mom Jeans for you. Really it’s only 7-we both love the Banana Republic ones!

Bev is wearing the Mother Hustler Ankle Fray that she bought last year and loves them. They can be styled with flat sandals, heeled sandals, tennies for the summer then booties for the fall and winter. Val is wearing the Levi’s Women’s Wedgie Icon Fit. A great jean at a great price.

We found these cute mom jeans at Banana Republic and just had to share them with you. This is the Ranger Straight Jean. With a high rise waist, straight through the hip and thigh and a straight leg- this jean will be a favorite for fall. The side leg detail creates a tuxedo stripe effect and the denim is a non-stretch fabrication. Bev may need to order the tall- 32″ inseam. In addition to the regular inseam at 29″ there is also a petite/short inseam at 27″ and sizing from 24-35. Let us know if this jean is a favorite of yours too!

Both of these pairs of jeans had the lighter wash which is great for now and would look good styled with black booties and a black sweater. Bev has on the Madewell Perfect Vintage Jean. Madewell also has a 90’s Straight Jean too! Val is wearing the Agolde 90’s High-Rise Pinch-Waist Jean.

Late Summer Outfit Idea

We styled this for an evening out for dinner right now- the Cinq et Sept Holly Jacket falls just below the high waist of the jean and the zipper from the bottom of the hem creates space over the belt. Kitten heels would work here too.

Mom Jeans are sometimes fabricated from a heavier denim- perfect for cooler weather. The straight leg styled with a bootie, sweater and jacket looks very pulled together. The boxy profile of the jacket-by Sam Edelman falls away from the pant and hits just below the hip.

The Levi’s Wedgie Jean was a surprise. They fit beautifully! This jean hugs your waist and also has a high rise. The fabric is soft and has minimal stretch. We both really like leather jackets and this one is so versatile. It practically goes with everything and hits a little bit below the waistband. Wear this outfit out to lunch with friends or dinner!
