Our Favorite Sunscreen and Self Tanners

We wish the focus on skin protection from the sun had been a little more popular when we were growing up. Fast forward to today and we are making up for lost time. We each have a small fortune invested in self tanners and sunscreen products than we can hands down endorse.

What To Look For In A Sunscreen

When shopping for a sunscreen there are certain terms you definitely want to pay attention to. Here is the list:

1.) Broad Spectrum: This means the sunscreen will protect you against UVB and UVA rays. You want to be protected against both to avoid burning and decrease signs of aging.

2.) SPF: This means sun protection factor! The professionals say you should choose a least a 30 SPF but the formulations are available in higher protection levels.

3.) Water Resistant: For people who spend time swimming or exercising in the sun this is a must! Make sure to look at the label to see how long the water resistant sunscreen will be effective. Waterproof and Sweat proof is NOT the same as water resistant. Some water resistant sunscreens are effective 40 minutes and others 80 minutes.

Here is the key….make sure you reapply every two hours for the best protection!!

How To Prepare Your Skin Before You Self Tan

1.). EXFOLIATE! You can use a wash cloth or a scrub to remove dead skin cells. Spend extra time exfoliating those parts of the body that are dry like your elbows and ankles.

2.) Remove hair 24 hours before…self tanners may sink into those loosened pores creating dark spots and an uneven finish.

3.) AVOID deodorants and perfumes.

4.) MOISTURIZE before tanning. You should start moisturizing your skin several days before you self tan to make sure your skins well hydrated.

5.) Use a tanning mitt!! The tanning mitt helps to avoid streaking and will not stain your hands.

6.) Make sure your skin is dry before dressing.

7.) Try to keep your tan going by moisturizing often!

What To Expect During Your Spray Tan Appointment

When you arrive at your appointment, you will be taken to the spray tanning room. This has a dressing area – WARNING – to avoid tan lines…you must remove your clothes. If you choose to wear a panty, they have disposable ones there or wear a dark colored panty from home. The spray tan session then begins. Your clothing that you wear to your appointment should be loose fitting and dark. You may want to consider your activities that day because showering may not take place until the next morning unless you want to go with the express tan.

How To Care For Your Tan Afterwards

Moisturize…Moisturize…Moisturize!!! DO NOT use an oil based moisturizer. Val suggests that as the tan starts to fade, use a self tanner at home to maintain your tan as long as possible.
