Winter Skin Care

Winter Skin Care

With each season comes unique challenges to our skin-right!? To effectively protect your skin from the changes in weather, temperature, humidity and more, switch up your skincare routine with the season. Today we are sharing information and a skincare routine that you can use as a guide during the winter months.

Winter Skin Care

Let’s start with what winter does to our skin. If you are in a cold weather climate, the drop in temperature and lack of humidity reduces our skin’s ability to retain moisture. Go indoors and your skin has to deal with hot dry air. Taking long, hot showers also can dry out your skin. Winter weather causes dry skin which is basically leaching the moisture out of your skin creating dry, itchy and flaky skin. Understanding this, we are focused on finding the right solutions to prevent skin issues and keeping your skin healthy.

What Does Winter Do To Your Skin

Winter Dries Out Your Skin

Winter causes dry skin which is basically leaching the moisture out of your skin creating dry, itchy and flaky skin. Also, fine lines and wrinkles are more noticeable- ugg!! This occurs most notably on exposed skin- face, lips and hands.

Winter Causes Redness and Inflammation

Redness and inflammation caused by blood vessels contracting and expanding going between indoors and outdoors.

Winter Temperatures Aggravate Skin Conditions

Cold weather can aggravate existing skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis and rosacea.

How To Take Care Of Your Skin During Winter

Moisturize Frequently

We found that the number one tip to taking care of your skin in the winter was moisturize frequently. The type of moisturizer is important- a thicker, cream based moisturizer is preferred over a thin lotion. Choose ones that have ceramides, hyaluronic acids, shea butter, lanolins and petrolatum to retain and seal the moisture into the skin. Apply to damp skin after cleansing- this helps to lock in the moisture. Consider using an oil based moisturizer. An overnight deep moisturizing treatment on hands, elbows, feet and lips addresses particularly dry areas.

Cleanse Gently

Use cleansing products that are gentle on the skin and provide some hydration. Avoid harsh scrubs and scented products. Gentle exfoliation is okay as is gentle dry brushing.

Limit Hot Showers

Hot showers further dry out your skin – but they feel so good. Limit to 15 minutes and use lukewarm water. Remember moisturize while skin is still damp.

Hydrate From Within

Increase your water intake throughout the day. Also, limit your alcohol intake. Alcohol is a diuretic that can lead to dry skin. Use a humidifier for your home to moisturize the air.

Use Sunscreen

It’s very important to use a daily facial sunscreen in the winter too! Apply a broad spectrum sunscreen with at least a SPF of 30+ to your face every day and multiple times during the day if you are outside enjoying winter activities. Remember to use a lip protectant that contains SPF too.
