Fine Hair Care

Hair Care for Fine Hair

We both have fine hair and spend quite a bit of time talking about how we don’t like our hair in many of the pictures we are in! Humidity and rain are certainly not our friends! When we vacation with our families in Florida we wonder why we even take the time to style our hair when it falls the minute we walk out the front door. We know there are bigger problems in life but you can’t hide your hair!

What is fine hair? It is not thinning hair. Fine hair means each individual strand is smaller in diameter whereas thinning hair means there is just less hair no matter how thick your hair is. Fine hair is less dense hair. In addition, fine hair is more damage prone and can break more easily creating split ends which in turn makes your hair appear less full. Your fine hair is part of your genetics and you can’t do much about that part. We have some hair care ideas that have worked for our fine hair and we are hoping they work for you too!

Hair Care for Fine Hair

Women in our demographic that have fine hair have learned a few basics that are crucial when maintaining fine hair.

Shampooing

Try to resist washing your hair too often. We know from your own personal experience that washing your hair does make your hair appear fuller but you are most certainly washing out natural oils and creating a dry scalp. This is not ideal! We try to wash our hair every three days. On the third day if you don’t like the appearance of your hair you can clip it up, wear a cute hat, or use your sunglasses as a headband!

Conditioning

Use a conditioner but do not overdo it! Heavy conditioner will weigh your hair down and make it look limp and straggly! Although there are conditioners that are designed for fine hair less is more!

Blow Drying

When you blow dry make sure you blow dry against the natural fall line or the opposite direction that your hair falls. It will make your hair appear fuller! We have found not brushing through your hair after curling helps because brushing is also a natural enemy of fine hair!! When blow drying scrunch your hair until it is around 90% dry and then use your round brush to smooth out the ends. Be gentle with fine hair! Too much brushing makes the hair appear limp.

Additional Tips

Try to get your hair trimmed regularly. As your hair grows longer the ends are the damaged part of your hair as that section of hair has been on your head the longest. Then your ends start separating! Your ends need friends!!

Use a mask once a week to promote healthy strands and use an exfoliator on your scalp because product build up can wear fine hair down.

Use dry shampoo to increase volume after you are done styling. Some people with fine hair love the sea salt spray to add texture.

Products We Use

Shampoo

The shampoos we use on our fine hair is Kerastase Densifique Bain Densite and Zenagen. Densifique Bain Densite is a thickening shampoo that contains hyaluronic acid for thinning hair. Zenagen is a plant based healthy way to target hair loss and grow thicker and fuller hair. Zenegen increases hair density and improves the hair volume too!

Conditioner

We like the Densifique Fondant Densite Conditioner and the Zenagen Conditioner. The Densifique Fondant Densite is a thickening hair conditioner made for thin hair and the Zenagen Evolve Conditioner is good for dry or overprocessed hair. It also enhances volume and give your hair a brilliant shine.

Specialized Treatment

It is important to use some specialized treatments specifically to stimulate hair growth and scalp care. The Initialiste Advanced Scalp and Hair Concentrate is a hair serum that strengthens hair fibers and reduces hair breakage. Excellent!!! Kerastase Elixir Ultima is a nourishing hair oil for all hair types that contains argan oil, camellia and marula oil. For fine hair only use on areas of your scalp that are dry and minimal use on dry ends!

Products To Put On Wet Hair Before Styling

We have used these products for so long and feel they are some of the best on the market. Kerastase Nutritive Nectar Thermique is an anti frizz heat protectant leave in cream for dry hair. Resistance Serum Therapista is a repairing serum for weak or over processed hair. Blonde Absolu Cicaplasme is a heat protectant with hyaluronic acid for all blonde hair types. Loreal Professional Volumetry is a root lifting booster for fine or flat hair which Bev has used for years and feels it does make a difference! Val has used both of these mousse’s from Kerastase with great results. The Densimorphose Hair Mousse also has hyaluronic acid in it and is very light. The Kerastase Mousse Bouffant is a thickening and bodifying mousse that is a total winner! For a wavy beachy look try the Bumble and Bumble Sea Salt Spray!

Styling Tools

We thought we would like to share some of our favorite stying tools!

The brushes have made a difference in Val’s hair care. They are light and designed for fine hair. Check out the blow dryer as it is light and will dry the hair quickly.

The Finishing Touches

We absolutely love the Laque Extreme hairspray. This hairspray holds the hairstyle but it doesn’t make you look like helmet head! We also will spray the Fresh Affair Dry Shampoo for a little more volume plus it really smells good too! A hair mask once a week is a good idea to moisturize those fine strands of hair too!

Nutrafol

We have both decided to start taking Nutrafol as we have heard from others that it really works! The company suggests taking the vitamins religiously for three to six months to begin to see results. Nutrafol offers a quiz which we found very helpful! This quiz helps identify which of their products they would suggest for your particular issue. Stress and hormones and many other things could be the result of your hair thinning and there are different remedies for each.

We did not receive product from the company for this post and will let you know later in the year if it works! We sure hope it does!!!
