Val’s Vacation Home Renovation in Harbor Springs, MI!

I am so excited to say we have purchased a second home in Harbor Springs, Michigan which has been a dream of mine for a long time! It happened so fast. Tom & I were going up north for a long weekend and Tom casually mentioned there were a few homes he wanted to see and had set up an appointment with a realtor. I wasn’t expecting much since homes in this area sell quickly. By the time we got up north one of the properties had already sold! As we pulled into the neighborhood I started getting excited.

“Up North” is what Michiganders have always called up north…whether you live in Petoskey or Traverse City. It is common name for the whole area. We’ve always thought that Up North was Michigan’s hidden gem. It really isn’t hidden anymore as people from states all around the country have realized the natural beauty of the area and our beautiful summers and falls are enticing. In our neighborhood alone there are five families from Texas! The biggest pull….WATER! We are surrounded by Lake Michigan, Little Traverse Bay and many, many lakes! I cannot say enough about the entire northern tip of Michigan.

Call me crazy but when we walked in the front door the house was calling to me! Tom asked me what I thought. He was shocked when I said the house had great bones and I liked it. What! It needs work and definitely an update. Yep..and I am up for the challenge! Hahaha! The rest is history!

We are in the beginning stages of the renovation and I just want to share some of the pictures of the house as it looked right after we closed! The previous owners left everything and I mean everything which actually turned out to be a benefit..we had a place to sit and sleep on our many trips there to plan the renovation.

Great Room

The open concept great room which encompasses the main living area, dining, and the kitchen will be a wonderful place to entertain family and friends and a fun space for our grandchildren to run around and play. We loved the built in shelves, the plantation shutters in all the rooms and the floor to ceiling fieldstone fireplace are wonderful features. The house has many windows which creates a light and airy atmosphere perfect for up north.

Kitchen

The kitchen island is being replaced as I write this which we believe will have a very positive impact on the room. The green tape is the outline of the new center island which will give us enough room to fit five counter stools around the island for more seating space. So important with our large family!
