We love summer! Winter can last a long time here in the Midwest and spring can sometimes drag its feet and stick around too long!! We are starting to get some really nice days here in Michigan which means we are all excited to spend more of our time outdoors! We both spent the weekend cleaning up our outdoor spaces, getting the flowers planted and updating and refreshing pillows and other accessories. Entertaining outside is so special. Being outside with nature while you are celebrating with family and friends a special event or just having cocktail hour with your best buddies is so enjoyable..being outside just adds another layer of special!
Start with some cozy outdoor furniture as you would the interior of your home. This is a good starting point and keep designing your outdoor space from there!

We are going to break down the different selections that can make your outdoor space so inviting. Sharing some of our favorite ideas is something we love to do but please comment in the section below if you have any other great outdoor decoration ideas! We love your inspiration!
When To Decorate For Summer
We would start decorating right now..in fact we both decorated this past weekend!! It really depends on what part of the country you live in but traditionally for the Midwest mid to late May is a good time to start as the weather really starts improving.
How To Decorate An Outdoor Space For Summer
Lots of Pots and Beautiful Flowers
Nothing spells summer more than flowers and plants displayed in interesting pots in various sizes in your outdoor space. Create interest by grouping them together with larger pots in front of the smaller. You can also put different vegetation in these pots along with flowers that compliment each other aesthetically!
Don’t be afraid to group together pots that are not identical or maybe not even the same color for more visual interest. What ever makes you happy and comfortable in your space is all that really matters!
Outdoor Rugs
Many people never consider utilizing an outdoor rug. We are here to tell you they add so much ambience and interest to your outdoor space. It is true that the life of an outdoor rug is not forever due to nature (rain and wind) or even mold but by the time the rug has gotten to the point where it just doesn’t look good you will be ready for a new look anyway!!
Umbrella’s
Having an umbrella is essential..keeps the sun off your face (wrinkles!) and it is more comfortable when the days start getting really hot. We have shared a few here but we have to say some of our favorites come with lighting on the underside of the umbrella. It looks amazing and cozy at night and helps with illumination if you are outside after sundown!
Garden Seats
The garden seat adds so much beauty to your backyard. They are available in many different shapes, colors and finishes too. The garden seat is useful too…you can sit on them and they also serve as an end table to set down a beverage!
Outdoor Pillows
Adding a splash of color to your outdoor seating is another way to decorate your outdoor spaces. Selecting pillows is a less expensive way to add color and to create a finished look.
Bar Carts and Coolers
This is a must have if you like to entertain during the summer months. Instead of running back and forth into the house to get more beverages or glasses you will have everything right at your fingertips to entertain. We have found some really good ones! Take a look!!
Beverage Dispensers and Buckets
Here are a few dispensers and ice buckets to make your outdoor entertaining easier! The dispensers are pretty easy to fill with flavored water so everyone can hydrate throughout the day without going in and out of the house. Throw in your favorite fruits with water and ice and you are ready to go! One plus…it looks so pretty!
Outdoor Candles
Lanterns and candles add a cozy and warm ambience to outdoor areas!
Serving Trays
Purchase some pretty trays to serve charcuterie boards, vegetable trays or anything else when you are entertaining.
